USDA announces expanded BSE surveillance program

US - Secretary of the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) Ann Veneman this afternoon announced an expanded program of surveillance for bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) in the United States. Preparations for the increased testing will begin immediately and the program is expected be fully operational by June 1. The new testing procedures will be in place for 12 to 18 months, after which an assessment will determine future plans.
