Two thirds don’t know milk production costs

UK - Some 62 per cent of dairy farmers surveyed at this year’s Dairy Event do not know their costs of production.

And those that did, pitched it more than 3p below what the RABDF and NFU say it really is.

A total of 634 producers were surveyed by the RABDF at this year’s event and the percentage unaware of their costs was actually 10 per cent more than the previous year.

Those believing they did know put the figure at 17.7ppl but the RABDF/NFU say it is now more like 21pppl including true labour costs.

RABDF chief executive, Nick Everington said the result was more alarming because the average age of the survey participants at 39, was well below the average age of UK dairy farmers. And their herd size at 193 cows, was twice the national average.

“Overall, these figures make alarming reading when a recent joint RABDF/NFU survey found that the cost of milk production has increased to around 21ppl, with the average producer price being just 17.3ppl,” he said.
