Perth Pedigree Beef Week
UK - Selective bidding was evident as the United Auctions’ Perth October pedigree beef week got under way. Although top prices were not as high as previous years, the averages for Aberdeen-Angus and Limousin bulls were well up on last year. K. Lomas reports.

Aberdeen-Angus bulls sold to 16,000gns on the first day of the Perth autumn bull sales and realised an average of £4,398 for the 36 bulls forward – £1,000 up on last year.
On a day of selective bidding the top price was paid for a January 2005-born bull, Haymount Wavacca, from Tom Arnott’s Haymount herd, Kelso. The bull, sired by Windyhill Equinox and out of home-bred Haymount Wavutiana, has completed a successful summer show season, being junior male champion at the Royal Highland Show and male champion at the Border Union and Berwickshire shows.
Stewart Barclay, Banchory, Kincardineshire, paid the top money and intends to use the bull on the 20 Aberdeen-Angus females he breeds alongside his father Neil’s pedigree Harestone Charolais herd.
Other leading prices included 11,000gns for November 2004 bull Balmarchie Rannai, from John Lascelles, Carnoustie, Angus. Mr Lascelles, who last sold Aberdeen-Angus bulls at Perth 25 years ago, sold the Netherton Kiwi Sam-sired bull to Robert Putz, Durrus, County Cork, Ireland.
