Dairy performance management is a concept that highlights the importance of keeping herds healthy, and businesses profitable – right across the production process. It identifies the different segments that make up the dairy production process – but emphasises that each of these dynamic parts should be balanced across the whole cycle, in order to ensure optimised herd performance.

By optimising each part of the milk production process, producers and veterinarians can be assured of maximising returns.

FOCUS: Worming as part the dry period

More than 90% of dairy cows are infected with worms that can reduce appetite and milk yield,[1,2] even though the effect may not be obvious. By using an appropriate wormer in the transition period before calving, as part of a holistic approach to Dry-off, cows can benefit from improved appetite, bodyweight and yield throughout lactation. Three studies have shown that using Cydectin Pour-on in this way can increase daily yield from 0.53-1.24kg per cow [3-5]. For a lactation of 305 days that is equivalent to an extra 160-378 litres of milk per cow.
