Most recently, on 11 May, China submitted a report to the World Organisation of Animal Health (OIE) saying that seven cases had been detected in a herd of 50 in Ghizou province. Two animals died and the rest were destroyed to prevent the disease spreading further.

The source of the outbreak is unknown, but the disease was of serotype O. China is not implementing a vaccination programme, but is relying on stamping out and movement controls to combat the disease.

In Angola, a report was submitted to the OIE on 10 May. The affected herd, of 34 cattle, was located in the Cunado Cubango region near the Namibian border and the Cubango river.

The twelve animals affected in the outbreak were destroyed, but 3600 cattle were susceptible in the village. The report said over 3500 animals had been vaccinated in the region against Foot and Mouth.

In South Africa, four cases were reported in a village in Limpopo province. The outbreak occurred outside of the recognised FMD-free zone. State Veterinary Services are applying vaccination as a control measure.
