Chile Sees First Live Cattle Exports Leave to China

CHILE - Chile has exported its first batch of live cattle to China.

The consignment was a herd of 7,300 heifers with 52 per cent coming from farms in the Los Lagos region, 40 per cent from the Región of Los Ríos y and the remaining eight per cent from Biobio and Araucania.

Minister of Agriculture, Carlos Furche said: "With this, an additional line of business for livestock has opened up, which strengthens the dairy industry, which has doubled its production in the last 10 years.

“These exports generate income and a better quality of life for thousands of medium sized farmers.”
The launch of the exports was the result of a trade mission that the Secretary of State made in September this year.

The animals will be transported in the vessel Polaris, which has nine levels and spacious pens for the cattle to travel n good condition. It also has two large silos for storage of food and a special area for treating animals that might suffer an injury or illness during the trip.

The cattle were transported for two days in 60 trucks from the quarantined premises located in the Region of Los Ríos. The journey to China will take 26 days and be supervised by the 56 crew members.
