This has coincided with a fall in exports, down 10 per cent, and a 3.5 per cent lift in imports, dragging fattened heifer and steers prices down more than 12 per cent.

A report for the first six months of the year, Bulletin of beef, production trends, prices and foreign trade has summarised all categories of cattle as having grown by headage, barring steers which shrunk 1.2 per cent.

Slaughter has matched this increase, with cow and heifer data showing a 16.1 and 23.5 per cent rise. Calf production was up one third.

Germany and South Korea were the main destination for Chilean beef, of which 721 tons was exported, contrasting with over 68,000 tons of imports.
