Botswana Vaccinates Cattle to Prevent Spread of FMD

BOTSWANA - The country's veterinary authorities have reported that ing vaccination of cattle around the foot and mouth disease outbreak is continuing.

According to follow-up report no. 2 sent to the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE), no new outbreaks have been reported.

According to the OIE, the disease remains restricted to the original outbreak affecting only 4 crushes. No new cases/outbreaks or infected crushes seen so far.

Epidemiological investigations of this event are continuing and a weekly follow-up report will be submitted.

A total of 33895 cattle have been vaccinated in the administrative division of Ngamiland. Conventional SAT 1, 2, 3 vaccine have been used both in 2a and 2b subzones.

Contact with wild species has been identified as the main cause of the outbreak.
