Grampian Takeover to Boost Scottish Industry

UK - NFU Scotland believes that the acquisition of leading Scottish food company, Grampian Country Food Group, by the Dutch company Vion must act as a springboard to move Scotland’s meat industry onwards and upwards.

Vion, a farmer-owned business, already has interests in the UK that are involved in the fresh pork, bacon and sausage markets. The chairman of Vion UK is former Meat and Livestock Commission chairman, Peter Barr.

NFU President, Jim McLaren said:

“There has been an air of uncertainty over the future of Grampian for some time. That has now been lifted. We have spoken to Peter Barr this morning and will sit down with him at this week’s Highland Show in Edinburgh to hear more about Vion’s plans and intentions.

“There are great opportunities to drive forward the beef, lamb, pig and poultry sectors in Scotland. Our producers are desperate to be a part of that future vision but are struggling to see beyond escalating costs and the pitiful margins currently being made.

“Here is an opportunity for Vion, as one of Europe’s largest food companies, to play its part in taking Scottish product to wider, more valuable markets and help ensure that the critical mass of Scottish production is maintained. We look forward to that discussion.”
