21 February 2011

SOUTH KOREA - The South Korean veterinary authorities have reported an outbreak of foot and mouth disease in the country's swine population.

The World Organisation for Animal Health received follow-up report no.12 on Friday, 18 February. According to the report, the outbreak occurred on 14 February in Daejeon Metropolitan City.

A total of 2000 animals were found susceptible to the disease, out of which five cases were identified. All affected animals were destroyed.

The source of the outbreak remains unknown. According to the report, the number of culled animals (as part of disease control) in the affected farms depends on the vaccination status and timing. The final count of culled animals will be definitively given in the future.
