South Korea Reports Seven New FMD Outbreaks

SOUTH KOREA - There have been a further seven new outbreaks of foot and mouth disease (FMD) in the country's pigs.

The veterinary authority sent Follow Up Report No. 11 dated 9 February to the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE).

The latest outbreaks started between 31 January and 6 February and involved seven pig farms in the southern half of the country in the provinces of Chungcheongnam-do (South Chungcheong), Gyeongsangbuk-do (North Gyeongsang) and Gyeongsangnam-do (South Gyeongsang) as well as Busan City.

In all, 15,181 animals were involved, of which 25 showed symptoms. The authorities reported that 3,921 pigs on the affected farms had been destroyed, adding that more would be culled, depending on whether vaccination had been administered and when.
