Scientists Create Edible Food Packaging Made from Milk Proteins

Milk proteins have become popular as supplements for muscle-building exercise fans, but scientists have now found another use for them in packaging for food.

Currently, food wraps are usually made of plastic, which uses up non-renewable petroleum resources, and creates a lot of waste that does not biodegrade easily.

The new wrap, based on the protein casein, is edible as well as more environmentally friendly. It looks similar to store-bought plastic wrap, but it is less stretchy and is better at blocking oxygen.

The protein-based films are powerful oxygen blockers that help prevent food spoilage. When used in packaging, they could prevent food waste during distribution along the food chain,” said research leader Peggy Tomasula – click here to learn more.

In other news, the EU this week revealed the details of the dairy rescue package, including the scheme to reduce milk production.

Each individual dairy farmer will have to decide whether or not to participate in the EU-wide scheme for reducing milk production, with the prospect of a payment for reducing production in the period from October-December, relative to the same period last year.

Agriculture commissioner Phil Hogan commented: “I am confident that this measure will contribute significantly to improving market sentiment and will be reflected in improved prices for European dairy producers.” – Read more.

Dairying - Using Science to Meet Consumers' Needs

Dairying once again finds itself at a crossroads. Increasingly producers and the scientists who work with them need to harness their knowledge and expertise to meet the demands that consumers have for milk and milk products. This volume discusses how the industry can meet the needs of today's consumer. Scientists, producers, processors and marketeers together with those interested in the wider issues of biotechnology and the environment, present their views on five key areas of debate: cows for lifetime production; management for lifetime production; feeds and feeding; opportunities and impact; marketing - the myth against milk. The book concludes with a chapter looking at the future of dairying.
