Editorial: FTAs To Provide A $400 Million Benefit To US Dairy Sector

US Congress has approved free trade agreements (FTA) with South Korea, Colombia and Panama, ending a four-year stalemate in the forming of new trade partnerships.

The agreements offer significant opportunities for US dairy producers, providing an estimated benefit of more than $400 million a year. Specifically, according to an economic impact analysis released by the National Milk Producers Federation, the South Korea agreement would benefit US dairy producers by $380 million per year in both increased exports and increased domestic prices.

Additionally, that same study estimates the Colombia and Panama agreements together would add $50 million annually to the US dairy sector.

In the EU, proposals for reform of the Common Agricultural Policy have introduced a "greening" element, in addition to the basic payment. It has been proposed that an extra payment per holding will be rewarded for respecting certain agricultural practices.

This includes the maintenance of permanent pasture, crop diversification and maintaining an ecological focus area (a sort of setaside) of at least seven per cent farmland.

Many believe the setaside proposals to be a step backwards, particularly when considering the high prices that European livestock farmers pay for imported grain.
