Editorial: Fair Prices For All

A major victory has been won by the UK agriculture industry, as the British government has decided to establish an ombudsman to police the grocery supply chain. The new code of practice will come into place next month, when a consultation period will decide on how best to enforce and manage it.

McDonalds has teamed up with The Eco2 Project to investigate methane emissions from cows on over 350 UK farms, in a bid to help producers reduce their carbon footprint.

In the US, the Department of Agriculture has published draft guidance for cattle slaughter establishments in an attempt to reduce the risk of E.coli 0157:H7 contamination. The USDA has also issued over $175 million in disaster payments to US livestock producers throughout 2009.

The American Meat Institute has rejected claims that say current regulations are anti-competitive. It believes existing anti-trust and competition statutes are fully effective for the meat industry.

An outbreak of foot and mouth disease in Korea has been confirmed, which has led to the closure of five cattle markets.

According to the latest World Agricultural Supply and Demand Estimates from the USDA's World Agricultural Outlook Board (WOAB), cattle weights are expected to be lower, reducing beef production, whilst milk production is set to increase.

US - A new genomic test that will expand the breadth of cattle DNA evaluation by almost a thousand-fold from a current 56-marker technology to predictions that utilise more than 50,000 markers, will be released by Pfizer Animal Health later this month.
