Editorial: The Same Old Story About Brazilian Beef
A new week began with an old story resurfacing - the same accusations, the same protesters and the same culprits (if that's what they really are). Like last time, it was the Irish Farmers Association which led the dispute over the safety of Brazilian beef and in doing so started a rally of supporting calls from other UK farmers' unions.
Despite satisfactory results from the EU Food and Veterinary Office, the National Farmers Union expressed concern, saying that problems with animal identification and movement controls still remain. Later, speaking at Anglesey Show, NFU Cymru Vice President, Ed Bailey said: "Either Brazil meets EU standards or it does not export meat to Europe - it should be as simple as that."
Leaders of these unions say that Brazilian cattle are affected by Foot and Mouth Disease and exports may contaminate domestic cattle. In January 2008, EU Health Commissioner, Markos Kyprianou, imposed a temporary ban on almost all Brazilian beef imports over the same concerns. But later, satisfactory inspections reopened the European market to many Brazilian exporters.
Recently, the Brazilian Ministry of Agriculture forecasted a 93 per cent increase in beef exports during the next 10 years. With this in mind, it is difficult to access the true concerns of the EU beef industry.
