Scotch Beef PGI, Scotch Lamb PGI to be High Profile at HK Event

26 April 2019

QMS - Quality Meat Scotland

HONG KONG - Two of Scotland’s most iconic foods – Scotch Beef PGI and Scotch Lamb PGI – are set to be high profile in Hong Kong next month at HOFEX, Asia’s leading food and hospitality trade show.

HOFEX runs over four days from 7 – 10 May 2019 and attracts more than 42,000 visitors from over 85 countries and regions. The event caters to delegates looking to supply retail outlets, food service or the food processing industry.

At the event, Quality Meat Scotland (QMS) will share a joint stand with HCC Meat Promotion Wales and, along with AHDB, will showcase premium red meat products from England, Scotland and Wales as part of a UK initiative to support exports.

Samples of top-quality Scotch Beef and Scotch Lamb will be available for potential buyers to savour and QMS will be promoting the Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) status of Scotch Beef and Scotch Lamb, along with the guarantees of quality assurance, provenance and welfare that underpin the brands.

Tom Gibson, Head of Market Development with QMS is attending the show and said with the continued uncertainty over the Brexit outcome, it’s essential that we work to further develop international markets.

"There is a definite strong appetite from high-end food service and retail outlets in Hong Kong for Scotch Beef and Scotch Lamb - premium brands which are underpinned by high production and welfare standards," said Mr Gibson.

"It is therefore really important to attend events such as HOFEX in order to meet with discerning buyers, showcase and sample Scotch Beef and Scotch Lamb and, of course, further develop our presence in the Asian market."

The presence at HOFEX, as well as other international trade shows and activities, is funded by the £2 million fund of AHDB red meat levies ring-fenced for collaborative projects which is managed by the three GB meat levy bodies – AHDB, HCC and QMS.

The ring-fenced fund is an interim arrangement while a long-term solution is sought on the issue of levies being collected at point of slaughter in England, for animals which have been reared in Scotland or Wales.
