Yonhap News Agency reports that the data by Statistics Korea showed there were 3.06 million cattle in the country at the end of June, up 1 per cent, or 31,000 head, from a year earlier.

Pigs moved up 1 per cent on-year, or 117,000, to 11.3 million.

The rise in the number of cattle was caused by more calves being bred in the country in the wake of price hikes, the data showed.

Compared with a year before, higher market demand caused more cattle and sows to be bred, which pushed up overall numbers, the statistics office said.
