At the end of 2017, they accounted for around 19 per cent of the market. The Top 4 retailers saw a 2 per cent reduction in volume sales, with their majority falling to 64.5 per cent. Other retailers too saw a reduction in cheese sales.

Overall, the value of GB retail cheese sales increased in 2017 compared to 2016, as both volumes and average prices rose.

In percentage terms, processed and other types of cheese saw volumes fall by around 1 per cent while low fat varieties fell nearly 5 per cent.

All other types increased, with cheddar up 1.4 per cent - again due to improved volumes and average price.
