New Fonterra Dryer to Supply Over 20 Countries

20 August 2015

NEW ZEALAND – The latest addition to Fonterra’s growing processing capacity has started cranking out whole milk powder in the lower North Island and is expected to supply over 20 countries.

The dairy giant says the “high-efficiency” Pahiatua site will supply markets stretching to South America, the Middle East and Southeast Asia, relieving pressure on existing processing capacity.

This should offer greater flexibility when opting for products during peak season, Fonterra says.

“This means we can be more agile in meeting product trends and changes in customer demand,” said Robert Spurway, a Fonterra director.

Several measures have been taken in plant design to ensure Fonterra can deliver on its sustainability commitments, according to plant operations manager, Bill Boakes.

“The plant is the first in New Zealand to reuse its own condensate, significantly reducing the amount of water needed to process each litre of milk,” said Mr Boakes. “On top of this, the new gas fired boiler has a number of systems for heat recovery that will drastically improve our energy efficiency."

The dryer is set to run at full capacity in October.
