Irish Factories Accused of Scare Tactics

12 August 2015

IRELAND – Meat plants have tried to “destabilise the market” and “frighten” farmers into selling cattle at lower quoted prices, according to a farm spokesperson last week.

Irish Farmers’ Association livestock chairman Henry Burns has accused plants of misleading “propaganda” at a time when cattle supplies remain “very tight”.

“Some plants are having to pay a base of €4.20/kg for steers and €4.30 base for heifers to get numbers,” said the IFA. “In addition, he said these same factories were very anxious to get cattle with immediate delivery.”
