UK – Charolais cattle have bucked a trend by being one of the major beef breeds to show improvements in calving ease and growth rate.

This is according to Charolais society chairman, Steven Nesbitt, who said performance recording and genetic selection tools are keeping the breed in the vanguard.

Speaking at the society’s annual meeting, he praised the use of Breedplan performance recording data and the rating system ‘Completeness of Performance’.

He said: “The star rating system which identifies and rates the quality and quantity of performance information recorded with Breedplan is in turn helping them to underpin EBV accuracy and reward them for their recording efforts.

“The system is also encouraging more breeders to record more comprehensively.”

He backed the decision to allow Breedplan only bulls at the biennial Stirling sales as it had been “fully vindicated”, resulting in record bull numbers and average prices.

“Added to that is the society’s rigorous data checking procedure to ensure accurate recording,

“During the last 12 months, 154 herds were checked, whilst calf registration is now compulsory within 27 days of birth, after which stringent penalties are introduced, procedures to give bull buyers more confidence.”
