Poland's Agriculture Industry: Pig Production Down, Dairy Booming

09 June 2015

ANALYSIS - Poland's agriculture industry is seeing farm size expansion and one of the questions looming is whether the industry should support larger, progressive farmers or smallholders. Karol Bujoczek, editor of Top Agrar Polska, speaks to 5m at World Pork Expo.

Bujoczek said since 2004 when Poland joined the EU, pig production has gone down. Small pig farmers have exited the market, and larger operations haven't been able to increase their numbers to make up the difference.

He said the pork industry is currently focused on slaughter houses and fattening facilities, but they lost the sow and piglet production business. Now sow facilities expansion is a key concentration area for the industry.

Since the end of the quota system, Poland's dairy industry has also seen growth in their new free market. Poland is a net exporter of milk - 80 per cent is exported to European markets.

He said the Russian embargo has caused problems for the dairy sector. However, the fruit sector had all but collapsed due to the embargo but is now recovering.
