Recipe for Angus, Bos Indicus Success For Northern Australia

12 May 2015

AUSTRALIA – Cattle industry experts see no reason why Angus genetics can’t be infused into Bos Indicus herds in Australia’s arid north.

This message was brought to farmers at Beef Australia 2015, where producers were given tips to make Angus work within Brahman type herds.

At the Rockhampton conference, producers heard that slick-coated animals work best and animals, particularly breeding bulls should be given time to adjust to their environment.

Troy Setter Chief Executive Officer for the Consolidated Pastoral Company, said: “You must realise they may not be able to work the first year.”

Success is also down to understanding the production system, according to Justin Boshammer of Sandon Glenoch Angus, based in Queensland. This helps match Angus cattle accordingly.

Veterinary insight rated Angus as a ‘great all-rounders’, with polledness being a huge benefit, as well as the consistent line.
