A shipment of 6,800 dairy Holstein Friesian cattle was confirmed on Thursday for Tianjing, taking the grand total to over 14,000.

Authorities have emphasised the genetic and health credentials of the animals.

"This second shipment consolidates the export of live cattle to China and encourages us to continue working to open new markets to help us complement and enhance agricultural activities in the region," said regional minister Pamela Bertin.

The first batch was sent in December, with most cattle sourced from Los Lagos and Los Rios and small amounts from Biobio and Araucania for both shipments.

Regional secretary for the ministry for agriculture, Andrew Duval sees livestock shipping as “an emerging market niche” for the dairy sector.

“What is making China import animals is ultimately a need to increase milk production,” said Mr Duval.

“The service has been checking the sanitary conditions of livestock to comply with sanitary protocol required by the Official Veterinary Service of the People's Republic of China (AQSIQ).

“This work can rule out diseases such as brucellosis, tuberculosis, bovine viral diarrhea, leukosis, among others.”
