40 Per Cent More Beef Needed From World Herd18 February 2015
US - A campaign for a food secure world is gathering momentum and telling the cattle industry that it will have to increase production by 40 per cent in 35 years.
The Enough Movement is striving to address the potential issue of feeding nine billion people by 2050, of which three billion will be middle class, according to animal health company Elanco.
"This creates a need for 60 per cent more food in milk, meat and eggs," said Gary Vogel, technical advisor at Elanco."
At the National Cattlemen's Beef Association convention in San Antonio, Texas, Mr Vogel told TheCattleSite that current weekly per capita beef consumption is 6.4 ounces, but that this is set to increase.
"In the next 35 years, by the year 2050, we expect that number to increase to 6.8 ounces," he added. "A we try to tie the increase in global population coupled with the movement to middle class, we expect to see an increase in beef demand by approximately 40 per cent over the next 35 years."
