Can Sustainable Intensification Help Feed the World?

19 January 2015

ANALYSIS - Sustainable intensification is one way to feed our growing population, according to Dr. Frank Mitloehner, professor at University of California-Davis.

Meeting growing food demands without depleting our environment is the definition of the term, Dr Mitloeohner told TheCattleSite.

While addressing the Global Roundtable for Sustainable Beef Conference in Brazil, he said the US leads the way in making more food from less, principally because it embraces biotechnology.

This is what makes the US beef and dairy industry a world leader, whereas Europe still has prejudices about using biotechnologies in cattle production, he said.

"Our best solution is to take out the hysteria and fear mongering and listen to the real data we have obtained in how to use biotechnology responsibly," he said.

"People are generally very hesitant to have chemicals in their food but they are not hesitant to use chemicals in health."

He added that data is key in coming to the right decisions.
