Ukraine Clamps Down on Raw Milk and Back Yard Meat

05 January 2015

UKRAINE – A government directive to regulate back-yard meat and dairy foods processing is underway to harmonize Ukrainian food standards with those of the European Union.

The rule, which is targeted at households producing processed and raw meat, raw milk and cheeses, is to drive a “gradual transition” to new food hygiene standards.

Ukraine’s agriculture ministry is conscious of the upheaval this will mean for many rural families and the socio-economic future of the country.

However, as of 1 January 2015, Vladislav Rutytska, deputy minister for European integration said: “No manufacturer is exempt from liability for failure to comply with hygiene in the production and sale of food products.”

The government abolished a ban on the sale of raw milk and meat products through unregulated lines, but stressed changes will be seen on article 35.
