Australian Live Cattle Exports Continue to Grow

AUSTRALIA - While Australian live cattle exports in October, at almost 81,000 head, were back more than 50,000 head on what was shipped in September, the exports in the year to October are 60 per cent above year-ago levels.

According to data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics, the year to October saw live exports of 1,036,000 head – worth A$966 million.

Asia remained the primary market for live cattle, taking about 90 per cent of shipments so far this year.

Meat and Livestock Australia said that while shipments in the year to October to Indonesia were above last year’s levels, at just over 576,000 head, during October numbers were half what was shipped in September, at just over 44,000 head.

Viet Nam remained a strong market, with over 17,000 head shipped during October, taking the volume in eh year to October to 152,000 head, three-fold what was shipped over the same period last year.

China and the Philippines also continued to be important live export markets, with 6,101 head (dairy cattle) and 2,800 head exported during the month, respectively.

MLA said that while the Asian region has remained strong, live cattle shipments to the Middle East have eased throughout the year. The shipments in the year to October, primarily to Israel and Egypt, were just over 88,000 head, back 26 per cent year-on-year.

Live sheep exports were almost 264,000 head during October, taking the year-to-October total to almost 1,947,000 head – worth A$202 million.

After receiving no shipments in September, Kuwait and Qatar returned to be the largest markets, with 148,625 head and 105,000 head shipped during the month, respectively, taking the total for the year to October to 663,004 head and 489,250 head.

Almost entirely to Malaysia, Australia exported 9,362 goats during October, taking the year-to-October total to almost 77,000 head – worth A$7.3 million.
