Colombian Rabies Outbreak Prompts Vaccination Plea

04 November 2014

COLOMBIA – Colombian farmers in the south east of the country are being advised to vaccinate livestock following a rabies flare up.

One animal has died in the Vaupes region, near the township of Mitu in the Amazon basin, reports the Colombian Agricultural Institute (ICA).

Official animal health technicians have conducted a vaccination programme in the affected area, including serological testing.

An ICA spokesperson said that Institute efforts will see 200 cattle vaccination projects.

He added: “To date, ICA has made four cattle collection in two days following detection of the outbreak and plans to make two more in different areas near the area.

Farmers have been urged to notify the ICA of any ‘unusual’ behaviour in wildlife, bat activity and bites.
