Chinese September Milk Powder Imports Plummet Year on Year

28 October 2014

CHINA – Imports of Whole Milk Powder into China this September were less than half the quantity of September 2013.

Imports reached 9,400 tonnes compared to 25,600 tonnes the year before, continuing a declining trend following a New Year ‘buying surge’.

This is according to DairyCo market analysts who added that record buying was met in January 2014.

Overall, for January to September, Whole and Skimmed Milk Powder imports were 56 and 35 per cent higher on the 2013 period.

DairyCo is doubtful the market will see the typical seasonal increase in buying in the final quarter due to high Chinese stocks.

DairyCo said: “China’s milk powder imports have displayed a degree of seasonality in previous years and tend to increase in the final quarter of the year, but potential stockpiling could impact on the trend this year.”
