HRH Prince Joachim Opens New Cattle Slaughterhouse

DENMARK - Danish Crown has celebrated the opening of the first cattle slaughterhouse in Denmark for several decades. Danish Crown in Holsted is the latest addition to the group, and even though the slaughterhouse has been up and running since spring, Friday, 22 August, was a big day.

The opening ceremony was attended by about 220 invitees who witnessed Prince Joachim's official "cutting of the ribbon". In fact, the traditional ribbon and scissors had been replaced by a chopping block, a meat cleaver and a leather string.

"We are standing in front of a huge venture. It is far from every decade that sees the realisation of projects on this scale. At the same time, the slaughterhouse is a truly visionary step. It shows that we should not only think about the present, but try to look many years into the future of Danish farming. I congratulate Danish Crown and everybody else on the opening of the world's most modern cattle slaughterhouse," Prince Joachim said before cutting the ribbon.

Following a brief instruction on how to handle the meat cleaver, the prince was given the first official guided tour of the slaughterhouse.

There was no mistaking the tremendous pride felt by CEO of DC Beef Lorenz Hansen. The slaughterhouse is his last mark on the company where he has worked for 49 years. Lorenz Hansen is retiring at the end of September.

"The idea was first broached in 1999, and at DC Beef we have waited a long time for this moment. When walking through the slaughterhouse, I feel truly proud that we have such a facility in Denmark. That we have what I have no qualms about calling the most modern cattle slaughterhouse in the world," Mr Hansen said at the opening.
