FMD Reported in Vaccinated Cattle in Northern Botswana

BOTSWANA - Foot and Mouth Disease has been found in herd of routinely vaccinated cattle in the north of the country.

The veterinary authority sent an Immediate Notification dated 26 June to the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE).

According to the report, on 19 June, 51 cattle of a herd of 1,500 at Mohembo in Ngamiland were affected by the FMD virus of currently unidentified subtype.

The outbreak occurred in routinely vaccinated cattle in the Northern part of zone 2A with a cattle population of 23,000 head. The whole of Zone 2A has a total population of 45,000 heads. Natural barriers around the outbreak include cordon fences on the North, North East and East and the Okavango delta on the South and South West. Lameness was reported in routinely vaccinated cattle in two crushes of Mohembo and Xaukwe in zone 2A. Clinical investigations revealed clinical signs highly suggestive of foot and mouth disease. Epidemiological investigations of this event are continuing.
