At around €11.4 billion, Germany’s dairy sector employs 80,000 dairy farmers, supplying a processor network of 110 dairy companies and 30,000 employees, according to Peter Bleser (pictured), Parliamentary Secretary of State to the Federal Minister of Agriculture.

Speaking at the Export-Union for dairy products, Mr Bleser said: “The strong, market-oriented and sustainable German dairy industry contributes to coverage of the global increase in demand for dairy products.

“Meanwhile, it is increasing agriculture value added in Germany.”

Income generated from exports is €9.3 billion, helped by China increasing its share of German dairy by 48 per cent last year, he added.

Regarding quota termination, he said it was ‘correct’ given market-orientation and would help European dairy sector performance.

He concluded: “Latest Common Agricultural Policy reforms offer extensions to the existing safety net.”
