Illegal Cattle Movements End Tunisia's Foot and Mouth Free Run
TUNISIA – Illegal movement of animals has led to a return of Foot and Mouth Disease to Tunisia after 15 years of being FMD free.

The outbreak has been confirmed on a small holding of 17 cattle on the north east coast, on which two animals were introduced to the farm, both FMD infected.
This is according to the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE), which confirmed illegal movement for causing the outbreak – the first FMD case in the country since March 1999.
Control measures reported by the OIE extend to crisis cells at national and regional levels, burying fifth quarter cuts and bones in two layers of lime, vehicle disinfection and vaccination of susceptible species upon entrance to livestock markets.
The holding, at Somaa in the Nabeul region, has been quarantined and placed under disinfection and national movement restrictions are being applied.
Experts are unaware of how the two cattle became infected.
