Saudi Opportunity for Paraguay Beef Pending

PARAGUAY – Declining beef exports could be halted by Saudi Arabian interest in dead and live weight shipments, says a Paraguayan Embassy official.

Bruno Jaen Bohorquez was reported in ABC news as having completed positive negotiations with the Saudi Arabian secretary of the Embassy, Saad BM Alqathami.

Paraguay is currently anticipating the outcome of a meat plants inspection following a letter from the Saudi Arabia ministry for agriculture.

The assessment will evaluate veterinary protocols.

Particular teething problems still exist around the foot and mouth disease status of Paraguay, and the interrupted vaccination schemes.

Poor weather over the recent months has flooded fields and roads have stopped veterinary technicians treating cattle.

In early March, National Quality and Animal Health Association President Hugo Idoyaga was forced to extend the first FMD vaccination programme.
