The catalogue (based on the latest December 2013 genetic indexes) brings together genetics from the highly successful alliance between Cogent and the Jersey Cattle Society (UK Jerseys) alongside bloodlines from the world’s leading cattle genetics marketing organisation, World Wide Sires.

This means there are US and Canadian bloodlines, Nordic bloodlines and bloodlines from the UK’s own leading herds. Adding some further input from Australia, the brochure presents by far the most diverse gene-pool available to Jersey breeders through any single source.

The overall result is a catalogue featuring world-leaders for profitability suited to a range of production systems; top bloodlines for fertility, type and udder health; and hardy, vigorous grazers that will stand the test of time.

“Cogent is extremely optimistic about the prospects for the Jersey breed, which is increasingly proving itself to be a highly efficient converter of feed into milk and milk solids, producing a smaller carbon footprint and delivering more nutrient-rich milk than any other mainstream breed,” says Cogent’s Owain Harries, who selects many of the bloodlines that are offered in the catalogue.

“Our Visions programme - which tests young Jersey sires in herds across the UK - is firmly focussed on developing these attributes and ensuring the bulls that go into AI are perfectly suited to UK systems, and I’d urge anyone with an interest in the breed’s future to consider using some of the young Visions bulls on offer on these pages,” he says.
