New Foot and Mouth Confirmed Near Nazareth

ISRAEL – The first outbreak of foot and mouth disease for over a month has been reported in the Hazafon region, close to Nazareth.

The World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) received notification that a breeding flock of 800 ewes and 350 goats - plus followers - had succumbed to the virus.

A total of thirty cases were confirmed on the holding.

Of these, 27 had resulted in fatalities in lambs.

The OIE described the affected population: “The herd contains 800 ewes, 500 lambs, 38 rams, 350 goats, 170 kids and 18 male goats. 27 lambs were found dead and in necropsy some changes in hearts have been seen.”

A tranche of control measures have been brought in such as quarantine, movement restrictions and screening. Vaccination is to be applied.
