The conference, Risk Analysis in the Mediterranean Basin, was organised by the Italian research group Istituto Zooprofilattico Sperimentale dell’Abruzzo e del Molise “Giuseppe Caporale” and looked at national and pan-national disease control methods.

The conference objective was to brief animal health officials on risk analysis, with attention given to the Mediterranean coast.

Dr Sebastian Napp from the Centre of Animal Health Research (CRESA) used Spanish examples to demonstrate the use of such analytical tools for decision making.

He explained how to rationalise the risk of rabies spreading to Europe from Morocco and explained how successful prevention of Bluetongue transmission via semen has been.
