Academic Stresses Importance of Tuberculosis Programme

CHILE – Animal health and food safety officials met in Temcuco, Araucania, on Wednesday, in the latest instalment of National Bovine Tuberculosis training to run in the country.

Event goers included twenty experts from the Faculty of Veterinary Science, at the Austral University of Chile attend technical inspectors and veterinary officers from packing plants and slaughterhouses.

Topics covered were epidemiology, prevention of spread and guidance on diagnostic tests.

Speaking at the conference, Dr Rafael Tamayo, Director of the National Tuberculosis Control and Eradication Programme stressed the importance that meat hygienists in controlling TB.

"It is essential that people working in meat packing plants and with animals for subsequently become human consumption know the most current knowledge which is always being reviewed,” said Dr Tamayo.

Director of Livestock and Agriculture (SAG) for the Araucania Region, Maria Teresa Fernandez said the course was relevant for the district.

"It is very important to us that the Austral University in Chile is working closely with the SAG, especially bovine TB with inspectors and veterinarians working in meat packing plants because they can teach them to know, have greater certainty and security for diagnosis,” said Dr Tamayo.

“This will also be a preventive measure considering the disease is a risk in terms of human health," he stressed.
