Excellent Year For Uruguayan Livestock Sector

03 September 2013

URUGUAY – The Uruguayan livestock sector has experienced a year ‘without a hitch’, according to an agri-business consultant and marketing company.

Indarte Rural Business has attributed an ‘excellent year’ down to strong market demand, greater access to foreign markets and good production conditions, reports Elobservador.

Average rainfall through the spring of 2012 and the summer preceded a mild winter which was helped further by historically high prices.

In fact, Head of Argentinian markets for Indarte, Ignacio Indarte said that Uruguay’s beef markets outnumbered the steers available, although beef shortfalls are in the process of being addressed.

“We have been at 2.3 million cattle, roughly speaking. This year we expect an historic calving to almost reach 3 million calves,” he told Elobservador.

With herd expansion on the cards, Mr Indarte is bullish about the future: “We are seeing great performance at the moment and are on a par with New Zealand and Australia.”

His confidence is based on prospective access to China and South Korea, which do not allow meat from countries with a foot and mouth disease vaccination status.
