New Vibrio Test Available for Western Canadians

The polymerase chain reaction test (PCR) reported 85 per cent of cases in samples taken from vibrio infected bulls.
Genome Alberta has described the 15 per cent false-positive rate as a ‘great improvement’ on the 38 per cent detection rate achieved by culturing vibrio from field samples.
The revelation is expected to come as good news to cattlemen in western Canada, the region in which the test has been made available.
Many cow-calf herds suffer with the condition when cows from different herds are allowed to comingle on common pasture.
It is a common reproductive disease caused by campylobacter bacteria and has similar symptoms to trichomoniasis, leaving cows open.
A vaccine is available and frequently administered to cattle entering common land.
Open rates can climb to 20-25 per cent, more than twice the typical five to 10 per cent rate, Genome Alberta added.
