Subsidies Have Desired Effect on Herd Size

03 May 2013

UKRAINE - More proof that subsidies are being successful at building cattle numbers has been released by the Ministry of Agriculture.

As of April 1 there were 5.1 million cattle in Ukraine. This is an increase of 3.4 per cent year on year.

This expansion is due to government subsidy payments being made available for farmers for the retention and maintenance of young breeding stock, according to the Ukrainian Agriculture Minister Mykola Prysyazhnyuk.

The greatest herd increases have been reported in 'household' businesses following a total sum of 63.8 million grivna in payments since June 2012.

"After launching the programme in June of last year, we have seen significant results. For the first time since independence has stopped we have seen a decline in livestock figures and a trend towards growth," said Minister Prysyazhnyuk.

"This year, we have continued to pay subsidies to farmers for maintaining and keeping young cattle. As of April 1, 2013 we have given 63.8 million of this aid."
