Greens Make Skills and Technology Priority

11 March 2013

UK – The state of the milk production sector was discussed at a Devon dairy farm when Green Party Leader, Natalie Bennett met with a group of producers to discuss sustainability issues.

Mrs Bennett told the farmers present: “I am concerned at the continuing loss of skills and knowledge as jobs and livelihoods in farming are lost, and food chains become more centralised and more mechanised.”

“Long distance food chains can also be less efficient in fuel, more damaging to the environment, and more vulnerable. Green Party policies would lift the tax burden on struggling family farms and local food retailers, but raise the tax burden on long distance haulage and mega food factories.”

The event also included the showcasing of a platemeter, a New Zealand gadget for measuring pasture growth, was showcased at the meeting.

Mrs Bennett added that she champions technological advancement as a means of increasing farm efficiency and lowering the carbon footprint of dairy product.
