22 November 2012
Meat & Livestock Australia

JAPAN - The Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare (MHLW) in Japan has commenced the formal process of receiving comments from the Japanese public on BSE counter-measures (both domestic and imports).

Meat and Livestock Australia reports that the process is expected to take one month, followed by explanations to the general public prior to actual changes to the existing conditions.

With respect to the beef import protocols from the US, Canada, France and Netherland, Japan will conduct bi-lateral talks with the government, as well as inspections in each country.

Japan’s trade news Shokuniku Sokuho reported that the discussions have “practically” commenced, however it is still uncertain when the countries will reach conclusions.

The source also noted on the possibilities of government level talks with the US being held in Tokyo in November, followed by the field investigation before the end of this year, if all goes smoothly.
