Exports are expected to reach 2.16 million tonnes over the next year.

This would make it the largest beef exporter in the world.

The ever expanding dairy herd is behind this growth, with beef exports accounting for 44 per cent of production.

In comparison to this growth in exports, production is expected to increase 14 per cent, to 4.2 million tonnes.

India has limited access to export markets due to issues with foot and mouth. This makes the main export markets Africa and the Middle East.

India has the competitive edge in these markets with all products being produced to Halal standards.

The largest importers of Indian beef are Vietnam, Malaysia, Jordan, Saudi Arabia and Egypt.

Due to India's inability to provide assurance of a foot and mouth disease status, major US and Australian export markets are not likely to be threatened by India's growth.

The US remains the largest beef producer, producing 11.5 million tonnes in 2011.
