This downward trend has been going on for a number of years, with the number of cattle farms in Spain now standing at 160,776. This is 5000 less than in 2010.

Miguel Arias Cañete, from the Ministry of Agriculture, said that it wasn't just cattle farms that were decreasing.

The exception appears to be heifer rearing units.

Galicia has the largest number of cattle farms followed by Castilla y Leon and Asturias. Measured by the number of cattle, Castilla y Leon is the largest cattle producing area.
