OIE: FMD Outbreak In Botswana

BOTSWANA - An outbreak of Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) has been reported to the OIE by Dr Kgoseitsile Phillemon-Motsu, Director, Department of Veterinary Services, Ministry of Agriculture , Gaborone, Botswana.

There has been one outbreak of FMD reported to the OIE.

The outbreaked occured at Itoto, Okavango, Ngamiland, MAUN

The outbreak effects a defined zone within the country.

So far, the outbreak has resulted in 15 cases, with no deaths.

The source of the outbreak is unknown.

Control measures currently being applied include:

  • Quarantine
  • Zoning
  • Movement control inside the country
  • Disinfection of infected premises/establishment(s)
  • No vaccination
  • No treatment of affected animals

Control measure to be applied is vaccination in response to the outbreak.
