The move is designed to increase welfare standards for the animals in transport to the slaughterhouse.

The plants will be built in Soroti, Mbarara, Nakaseke and Mpigi districts, according to a report on New Vision.

The move was announced by the agriculture minister, Bright Rwamirama, appearing before the parliamentary committee on agriculture.

The report says that the issue of cruelty to animals was raised by former Vice-President Gilbert Bukenya, who condemned the deplorable state in which animals, especially cattle, were transported to Kampala for slaughter.

He said that the ministry of agriculture, which knows the value of animals, had left them to suffer at the hands of cruel transporters.

The minister Mr Rwamirama blamed the cruelty on the lack of a veterinary Police unit that would be responsible to check for malpractice.
