This is the third increase since the beginning of 2011.

It remains to be seen what impact this latest tariff increase will have on the European beef trade as Turkey was the principal export market for European beef during the first four months of 2011 at 62,000 tonnes cwe.

At the beginning of the year, beef import tariffs in Turkey were in the region of 30 per cent.

Following a fixed increase of 15 per cent during the months, March, May and July, beef import tariffs have now jumped to 75 per cent, although still considerably lower than the tariff levels evident prior to October 2010.

Since Turkey announced their policy on lower beef imports tariffs last October, demand for European beef has responded positively. For the last quarter of 2010, exports of beef reached 57,600 tonnes cwe.

Despite beef import tariffs increasing by 15 per cent to 45 per cent during March this year, European beef exports to Turkey for the first four months of 2011 were in the region of 62,000 tonnes cwe.

If live exports were included, total bovine exports for the first four months of 2011 would amount to 73,400 tonnes cwe. Germany and Poland remain the principal European suppliers to the market.
