Beef Imports From Mexico On The Rise In Japan

JAPAN - Japan imported 36,905 tonnes swt of beef in February, up 22 per cent on last year and 14 per cent higher than the five-year average (data by Japan's Ministry of Finance).

Imports from the US increased 22 per cent year-on-year to 6,579 tonnes, while Mexico also geared up its presence by sending 1,562 tonnes (up 137 per cent ).

Almost 80 per cent of shipments from Mexico during the month consisted of frozen briskets, to be largely used in the gyudon (beef rice bowl) sector. Mexico has a preferential tariff agreement with Japan, allowing up to 6,000 tonnes per year.

Chilled and frozen imports from Australia lifted two per cent (to 10,807 tonnes) and six per cent (14,150 tonnes) from February 2010, respectively.
